2. Characteristics

Incoloy 800 wire is engineered for extreme environments, offering a unique combination of properties:

  • High-Temperature Stability‌: Maintains tensile strength and creep resistance up to 800°C due to its austenitic structure.

  • Oxidation & Carburization Resistance‌: Forms a protective Cr₂O₃ oxide layer at elevated temperatures, resisting scaling and carbon absorption.

  • Corrosion Resistance‌: Excellent resistance to sulfuric acid, nitric acid, alkaline solutions, and chloride-induced stress corrosion cracking.

  • Mechanical Strength‌: Typical tensile strength of 500-700 MPa (annealed condition) with elongation exceeding 30%.

  • Fabrication Flexibility‌: Easily cold-worked, welded (TIG, MIG), and machined using standard tooling.

  • Thermal Cycling Resistance‌: Low coefficient of thermal expansion (14.4 μm/m·°C at 20–100°C) minimizes distortion under cyclic heating.


3. Technology

Manufacturing Process‌:

  • Melting‌: Vacuum induction melting (VIM) ensures precise control over impurities (e.g., sulfur, phosphorus).

  • Hot/Cold Working‌: Hot-rolled billets are cold-drawn through diamond dies to achieve tight dimensional tolerances (±0.01 mm).

  • Heat Treatment‌: Solution annealing at 980-1030°C followed by rapid quenching to stabilize the microstructure.

  • Surface Treatment‌: Bright annealing in hydrogen atmosphere to prevent oxidation and enhance surface finish.

4. Theory

Incoloy 800 derives its performance from advanced metallurgical principles:

  • Solid Solution Strengthening‌: High Ni content stabilizes the FCC austenitic matrix, enhancing ductility and fracture toughness.

  • Chromium Oxide Layer‌: Cr reacts with oxygen to form a self-healing Cr₂O₃ layer, providing continuous protection against oxidation.

  • Precipitation Hardening‌: Controlled additions of Al and Ti promote fine (Ti,Al)C carbides at grain boundaries, improving creep resistance.

  • Thermodynamic Stability‌: The Ni-Fe-Cr ternary system minimizes σ-phase embrittlement and retains phase stability under prolonged thermal exposure.

  • Petrochemical‌: Wire mesh for catalyst grids, furnace internals, and reformer tubes in hydrogen sulfide environments.
