2. Characteristics

Incoloy 800 bar is engineered for high-temperature industrial processes requiring oxidation resistance and structural stability:

  • Oxidation Resistance‌: Forms a protective Cr₂O₃-rich oxide layer, reducing scaling rates by 40% compared to 310S stainless steel at 800°C.

  • Carburization Resistance‌: Stable in hydrocarbon-rich environments (e.g., ethylene crackers) with carbon activity <0.5 after 10,000 hours at 700°C.

  • Thermal Fatigue Resistance‌: Low thermal expansion coefficient (14.8 μm/m·°C at 20–600°C) minimizes stress during thermal cycling.

  • Mechanical Strength‌: Retains 200 MPa yield strength at 700°C, outperforming Alloy 600 in creep-limited applications.

  • Fabrication Flexibility‌: Excellent weldability (autogenous TIG welding possible) and machinability (70% rating vs. 316L stainless steel).


3. Technology

Manufacturing Process‌:

  • Electric Arc Furnace (EAF) + AOD Refining‌: Controls carbon to ≤0.08% and sulfur to ≤0.015%.

  • Hot Rolling‌: Processed at 1150–1200°C to refine grain structure (ASTM 3-5).

  • Heat Treatment‌:

    • Solution annealing at 1010–1060°C (1850–1940°F) followed by water quenching.

    • Stress-relief annealing at 870°C (1600°F) for cold-worked bars.
      Quality Control‌:

  • Ultrasonic testing (UT) per ASTM A388 for internal defects.

  • High-temperature tensile testing per ASTM E21.

  • Eddy current testing for surface cracks (sensitivity ≤0.1 mm depth).


4. Theory

The alloy’s performance is governed by its balanced metallurgical design:

  • Nickel-Chromium Synergy‌: High Ni content stabilizes the austenitic matrix, while Cr provides oxidation resistance via protective oxide formation.

  • Carbon Control‌: Low carbon minimizes chromium carbide precipitation at grain boundaries, preserving ductility.

  • Aluminum-Titanium Interaction‌: Al and Ti combine with residual carbon to form fine (Ti,Al)(C,N) precipitates, enhancing creep resistance.

  • Grain Boundary Strengthening‌: Controlled hot-rolling parameters produce equiaxed grains with minimal delta-ferrite, reducing crack propagation risks.


5. Application

Incoloy 800 bars are widely used in extreme thermal environments:

  • Petrochemical‌:

    • Ethylene cracking furnace tubes, reformer pigtails, and pyrolysis coil hangers.

    • Support beams for hydrocracker reactors (operating at 750°C/50 bar).

  • Power Generation‌:

    • Steam turbine bolts, superheater tube hangers, and boiler baffle plates.

  • Heat Treatment‌:

    • Fixtures for annealing furnaces, carburizing trays, and sintering boat components.

  • Chemical Processing‌:

    • Reactor agitator shafts in nitric acid production and chlorine gas preheaters.
